Task
This Volunteer Role May Involve
- Reading aloud from a book or local newspaper, discuss topics of interest with patient
- Playing cards
- Crafts - maybe help finishing a project e.g. knitting.
- Sitting quietly in companionship
- Running errands for the patient such as getting newspaper, toiletries etc.
- Evening patient companion – offer a drink to patients in Palliative Care Support Unit.
About Us
Roscommon University Hospital is a Model 2 Hospital within the Saolta University Health Care Group of hospitals. The Palliative Care Support Unit (PCSU) is an eight bed facility located adjacent to Roscommon University Hospital is open to patients since February 2023. The PCSU provides respite, symptom control and end of life services

- Remaining calm and comfortable with silence.
Chat with the patient where appropriate and report back to the staff nurse or manager if anything of note.
You may be advised to remain quietly with the patient, in this instance minimise noise / distractions e.g. mobile phones switched off or on silent.
Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Assist in providing a safe and pleasant environment.
Report any accidents or incidents relating to patients / staff or yourself immediately.
