Time Commitment:1.5 days per week

About The ICGP

The Irish College of General Practitioners is the postgraduate training body (PGTB) responsible for postgraduate education, training, and research in the specialty of General Practice. The College has a national advisory role in relation to medical standards and engages with the Medical Council, Department of Health and Children, the Health Service Executive, and the Health Information & Quality Authority among others. As a membership organisation, the ICGP is responsible for providing and supporting the continuous professional development for general practitioners, numbering over 4,000. The ICGP is the PGTB accredited by the Medical Council to provide professional training for doctors wishing to enter the specialty of General Practice.

About GP Training

About GP Training Since March 2021, the ICGP holds primary responsibility for postgraduate specialist medical training in the specialty of General Practice. As part of this responsibility, the ICGP designs and delivers a world-class and continuously improving GP Training Scheme, as set out in the vision, mission and values statement. Furthermore, the new National GP Training Programme represents a step change for postgraduate training in General Practice in Ireland. Building on the existing infrastructure of GP Training schemes, the College is committed to implementing a world-class National GP Training Programme, delivered through a blended learning model.

Job Purpose

The Assistant Scheme Director is a member of the educational team for an individual GP Training Scheme, delivering high standard coordinated training for doctors undergoing specialist training in general practice under the governance of the ICGP National Training Programme. Additionally, the

Assistant Scheme Director assists the Scheme Director in the promotion of coordinated training of a high standard for doctors undergoing professional training in general practice.

Key Result Areas

  • Undertake the full range of duties required when carrying out teaching, assessing, and facilitating small-group sessions with trainees (both face-to-face and virtually as appropriate).
  • Assist with curriculum planning, including the development of teaching materials and resources. Undertake curriculum delivery through small group and plenary teaching and facilitation.
  • Actively promote reflective practice and professionalism among trainees. Provide personal support and trainee mentorship when required.
  • Undertake trainee assessments and manage formative feedback on these assessments to the trainees.
  • Regular monitor Trainee progression; providing portfolio guidance and referring or intervening appropriately. Monitor and support trainee progression including education portfolio.
  • Ensure regular attendance and contribute accordingly at the Competency Review meetings.
  • Contribute, when required, to the development of assessment instruments.
  • Provide GP Trainer support and assist with the management of the delivery of day release.
  • When not teaching undertake a range of duties such as and not limited to: - Conduct quality assurance tasks (such as visits to GP practices and hospital teaching sites); Contribute to the continuous improvement of the GP Training Scheme, recruitment, curriculum evaluation and quality improvement process.
  • Participate in any committees established to assist with the Job purpose and collaborate and co-operate with the Scheme Director and the National Programme in the performance of any assigned duties.

Person Specification



Essential:

  • A fully qualified GP with MICGP and a current member of the College in good standing.
  • Be registered with the Irish Medical Council of Ireland on the Specialist Division for General Practice.
  • Be enrolled on and in compliance with the ICGP Professional Competence Scheme.
  • Have substantial full time or part time postgraduate medical experience in GP.
  • Concurrently hold a part time clinical appointment equivalent to a minimum of four sessions of clinical general practice in Ireland per week.
  • Extensive experience of GP training either in Ireland or internationally.
  • Familiarity with the ICGP GP Training Curriculum, the vision for National Specialist Training. Programme and demonstrable commitment to the continuous improvement of the training programme.
  • Familiarity with the relevant region.
  • A demonstrable record of leadership and management in postgraduate medical education/ training.

Desirable:

  • Higher qualification in medical education / health professionals’ education (or equivalent).
  • Excellent communicator, with demonstrated capability to effectively manage interactions with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrable experience in quality assurance in higher education.
  • Demonstrable innovative, adaptable, and flexible approach to continuous improvement and project work. The duties of this post may vary from time to time as the needs of the ICGP evolve and change.
