We currently have an opportunity for an Operation Systems Engineering Manager to join our New Abbott Diabetes Care Kilkenny site. The purpose of this role is to manage the team who will deliver highly complex and time critical systems projects to the business.


Major Responsibilities


  • Lead and manage the team responsible for the development and support for software control systems and machine inspection technologies.
  • Manage Engineering programs and personnel towards manufacturing process and product design changes with the aim of continually reducing product cost, increasing capacity and improving product performance and specifications.
  • Provide technical expertise in the upkeep and improvement of complex manufacturing equipment and systems.
  • Specify, design, verify and validate new manufacturing processes, in accordance with applicable medical regulatory standards. Lead, design and conduct system level characterization/verification of complex systems; collect, organize, analyse, and document test results.
  • Responsible for the development of technical project plans and schedules covering all Engineering activities (meeting all design control and process/product development SOP requirements). Work in the creation of schedules and budgets and reports on ongoing status.
  • Responsible for managing resources, the creation of and ownership of the delivery to project schedules to meet business critical timelines
  • Work in the development of significant process/product specifications, pFMEAs, DOEs, validation protocols. Lead/perform product definition, system architecture, requirements writing, requirements management, requirements analysis, risk analysis, hazard analysis, product test and evaluation, System V & V, and/or design control documentation.
  • Participate in technical design reviews for process equipment and product design and requirements documents.
  • Provide technical direction/leadership to project teams and provide timely and focused updates to management across site.
  • Represent the systems function, both within Abbott and to external organizations and customers. Communicate effectively and participate on cross-functional teams.
  • Direct multidisciplinary teams toward solutions addressing and owning project challenges to drive towards a solution.
  • Responsible for maintaining the effectiveness of the Quality System at the site in accordance with divisional and corporate requirements and applicable regulations.
  • Ensures that processes and equipment meet all applicable standards. Compliance with EHS regulations and Abbott standards by adhering to and maintaining EHS systems, programs, procedures that manage EHS risk and by demonstrating leadership and commitment through their actions and provision of sufficient resources.
  • Investigate new manufacturing processes for consideration for future projects. Protect any novel ideas with suitable disclosures and IP.
  • Gain an understanding of market trends and development paths.
  • Suggest methods of improving the cost effectiveness of existing products and processes through continuous improvement projects, yield improvement, increased machine output, inspection robustness, machine reliability, operator reduction, etc. Keep track of prospective process cost throughout development and investigation phases of a project.


Education & Experience


  • 3rd Level Degree in Engineering/IT or related discipline
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in a similar position
  • Experience in delivering successful high capital spend or highly technically complex systems projects is required for this position.
  • Experience in technical or systems leadership or management.
  • Ability to prioritise work assignments in an environment of complex and often conflicting inputs.
  • Technical experience in a relevant Engineering discipline.
  • Experience of managing projects within a regulated industry is desirable
  • Written and verbal communication skills is essential.
