Title And Summary
Lead Product Manager - Technical
Overview
Be part of the Mastercard Technology Fraud Products team developing new capabilities for Mastercard's Decision Management Platform, which serves as the core for multiple business solutions to combat fraud and validate cardholder identity. Our patented platform processes billions of transactions per day in tens of milliseconds using a multi-tiered, message-oriented approach for high performance and availability.
- Within the Decision Management Platform, the Decision Authentication and Enrichment (DAE) group provides decisioning services for the authentication of eCommerce transactions and decision enrichment services to a broad range of internal customers in Mastercard.
- The Lead Product Manager - Technical (PMT) position will be a key member of the DAE group, that faces outwards towards our internal customer base and product teams, and as such is the voice of the DAE teams.
- The PMT will be responsible for working with the customer base to understand, capture and document their business requirements, in significant business and technical detail, and to bring those requirements back to the DAE teams for further exploration and dissemination.
- The overall DAE group consists of 6 co-located sub teams, each with their own PMT, and the Lead PMT will be responsible to transferring the gathered requirements in significant detail to the sub teams, via the sub team PMT’s and Software Engineering Managers.
The Ideal Lead PMT Candidate Will
- Have a strong technical background, ideally an ex software developer who has changed career into product management. However, a candidate who shows a strong engineering and or technical background gained educationally, and or over years of experience, without necessarily having been a software developer, will be strongly considered. How technical ? e.g. do you understand and could you explain how a REST API request works? We don’t need you to write code, but we do need you to understand how software and technology in general works.
- Take the time to fully learn the functionality, architecture, dependencies, and runtime properties of the systems supporting the DMP platform. This includes the business requirements and associated use cases, Mastercard customer's experience, Mastercard's back office systems, the technical stack (application/service architecture), interfaces and associated data flows, dependent applications/services, runtime operations (i.e. trouble management/associated support strategies), and maintenance.
- Have a strong appreciation for the software development lifecycle, and what a team of developers needs in order to efficiently and effectively build a Product Feature to specification.
- Have a strong Product Management background with at least 3, but preferably 5 to 7 years product management experience. Preference will be given to candidates who can show experience of product managing large complex systems and or platforms, potentially across multiple software engineering teams.
- Need to display a strong understanding and experience in the mechanics of product management. Requirements gathering, understanding business value and analysis, documentation, feature and epic writing, acceptance criteria, prioritization, iteration and release planning, managing risks and dependencies, identifying and eliminating roadblocks, understanding the SDLC process, process improvement, defining the vision and roadmap, using metrics and data to generate insights and make decisions.
- Have a strong business case and business value acumen. The DMP platform has a core vision (big picture) of what it purpose is, who it’s customer are, and what it is meant to do. Just because the DMP platform could do it, doesn’t mean it should do it, and part of this role is understanding the DMP platforms core vision and capabilities, and evaluating a customer’s business needs against these core tenets of the DMP platform.
- Have superb communications skills, both written and verbal. The essence of this role, is eliciting the best possible information from a customer about their business need and business case, and passing that information seamlessly and clearly back into the many and varied parts of the DMP team, to be further analysed and understood.
- Be curious. Often customers think they know what they need, but in reality, often they don’t. Being curious enough to keep talking to the customer, and to keep asking questions until you truly understand what they “need” rather than just what they say they “want”, will be a key part of the success criteria for this role. Also, be curious enough to understand the end to end flow of a business process, and not just the input to the DMP platform and its associated output.
- Be capable of understanding, documenting and communicating the solution to the customers and other stakeholders. Once the requirements are gathered and analysed, the architects and engineers will come up with the ultimate solution, and the ideal candidate for this role will be capable of understanding and communicating this solution to a wide and varied audience.
- Be a team player. We in the DMP team are a big family. We like to do good work and have fun while doing it. We look to create a collaborative and supportive team environment, and the ideal candidate will fit seamlessly into this culture, and ultimately enhance it.
- Be capable of managing a large volume of “engineering work” information at all times. The DMP team is a large team, and has lots of work ongoing at any point in time, and the ideal candidate will be capable of keeping abreast of and managing this large and diverse workload within the team.
- As a leader in the PMT space with considerable experience, be capable of mentoring and guiding other PMT’s inside and outside of the team.
