Together, we can create new business opportunities and more sustainable future that we can all be proud of.

We want to transition the world towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. By pushing the boundaries of engineering and technology, we can make it work. We are always on the lookout for future-oriented talent – want to join the ride?

We are now looking for an
Expert Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE)
to join our Systems Reliability team within R&D and Engineering in Power Supply. This is a unique opportunity to support Wärtsilä's transformation towards a decarbonization path and contribute to a sustainable future while staying competitive in the industry.
The position is permanent, and the preferred locations are Trieste (Italy), Vaasa (STH, Finland), and Turku (Finland).

What you will be doing

As an MBSE expert at Wärtsilä, you will contribute to our decarbonization journey and sustainability efforts. Your responsibilities will include implementing MBSE practices to manage system complexity, improve team communication, and ensure data consistency and traceability.
You will help us stay compliant with regulations and drive innovation through a structured and visual approach to system design and analysis. As an MBSE-dedicated expert, you will create a unified model-based framework that integrates technical, regulatory, and environmental requirements into a single source of truth.
Additionally, you will train and guide your colleagues in adopting MBSE methodologies. By working closely with domain expert teams, you will ensure they understand and apply these practices, maximizing the benefits of our new approach.

As an Expert MBSE, your work will focus on these responsibilities:

  • Create and manage system models representing the engine system and subsystems, from design specifications to integration testing.
  • Work closely with Engine, Automation Experts, and project teams to ensure system models align with project/product requirements while ensuring traceability and consistency.
  • Execute system simulations to evaluate performance, identify risks, and validate functional and non-functional requirements
  • Develop guidelines and best practices for using MBSE and simulation tools, promote standardized approaches, and continuously improve the MBSE process within the company.
  • Act as an internal expert on these methodologies, providing support and training to team members and other functions on adopting MBSE and system simulation practices.

To be successful in this role, we expect you to hold:

  • Academic background in Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronic, …) or related fields that provide a solid foundation in systems thinking, modelling, and simulation.
  • Applicants with an MSc in Physics, Mathematics, or BSc. with extensive work experience will also be considered.
  • A Ph.D. in a related topic and additional certifications or training in MBSE will be considered a valuable plus.

The position will require:

  • Knowledge of SysML (Systems Modeling Language), UML (Unified Modeling Language), and tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler, MagicDraw, Capella, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with standardized data exchange protocols (e.g., FMI/SSP/DCP) for co-simulation and model integration.
  • Knowledge of simulation tools like GT-SUITE, Simulink, MATLAB, Modelica, and similar for system simulation and analysis.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or other relevant languages for scripting and automation.
  • Familiarity with fundamental AI concepts, tools, and frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements analysis, system architecture, integration, verification, and validation.
  • Experience integrating subsystems and modeling domains to capture interactions and overall system behaviour.

The position will also require:

  • An interest in internal combustion engines.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey technical information to diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively in an international environment and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, focusing on innovation.
  • An analytical mindset with a systematic, curious, open-minded, and focused approach.

In this role, travel is required to meet with our customers worldwide. Thus, we hope you will be ready to travel approximately 5%, even though most meetings are held virtually. We do offer a hybrid work setup.
