In partnership with our client a leading healthcare and nutrition company, I am pleased to announce we are currently seeking applications for an environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist will be responsible for implementation and refinement of EHS systems and governance to support site startup and routine operations. This role will support the Site Lead Team to develop, implement and maintain Environmental, Health and Safety practices, programs and initiatives, which will contribute to establishment of a strong EHS culture at the plant. This role is an individual contributor role whereby the individual must be a self-starter with significant professional and academic experience in Environment, Health and Safety in Pharmaceutical Operations or Medical Device (GMP Environment).

Required experience:

  • At least 4 years’ experience in the biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical industry (GMP environment), in an EHS role
  • Working experience in implementing EHS regulations, conducting incident investigations, interacting with regulatory agencies and external organizations and managing cross functional teams
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and endorse safety practices, monitor key safety performance indicators and visibly participate in promoting safety policies and initiatives.
  • Knowledge and understanding of environment, health, and safety permitting and regulations and reporting.
  • Specific experience in hazardous waste management or other professional EHS trainings or certifications a plus.
  • Experience in Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC) or Industrial Emissions (IE) Licensing, GMM (Genetically Modified Microorganism) Consent and/or Emissions Trading required.

Role and responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive EHS programs to ensure a compliance with all applicable government regulations and company standards and values. Review current policies with a continuous improvement lens.
  • Works closely with manufacturing operations staff and the wider team to promote safe manufacturing practices, procedures, and proper use of containment equipment and facilities.
  • Conduct all EHS ‘risk assessments’ as required by legislation and ensure they are reviewed at relevant intervals and maintain records of the same.
  • Support site supervisors with incident investigations, identify root causes, and implement improvement/action plans to prevent similar incidents from occurring. Where necessary, lead investigation process and/or collaborate with appropriate corporate staff on serious incidents.
  • Oversee all H&S accident/incident investigations and follow-up on close out of corrective actions.
  • Responsible for Emergency Procedures and to work with training providers for Emergency Response Teams to ensure the prevention of fire and the safe evacuation of employees in emergency situations.
  • Identify site EHS training needs, develop appropriate resources, and execute training sessions for employees and management as required.
  • Develop/direct activities that will stimulate and maintain employee interest as well as improve EHS performance.
  • Align and integrate the EHS strategy with the company’s mission, goals, and strategies.
  • Lead the site ESG team and develop a carbon neutral multi-year roadmap for the site.
  • Communicate compliance status, key performance indicators, trends, priority issues and business impact to key stakeholders.
  • Communicate and endorse safety practices, monitor key safety performance indicators and visibly participate in promoting safety policies and initiatives.
  • Liaise with other departments on purchases of equipment, articles and substances and with others as needed to ensure appropriate H&S standards are maintained.
  • Manage the operation of the site waste, ensuring compliance with all license and permit requirements.
  • Perform EHS hazard assessments including industrial hygiene monitoring and makes recommendations to control hazards.
  • Manage governance of life, safety, fire and property risk management programs.
  • Serve as the site Biosafety Officer
  • Lead application for site’s Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) license.
  • Partner with Human Resources on Occupational Health concerns and address issues in a timely manner.
  • Define annual EHS objectives & improvement plans in conjunction with SLT
  • Ensure that Occupational Monitoring programs (e.g. chemicals, noise, dust, VDU assessments, ergonomic assessments, etc.) are defined and completed.
  • Provide insight and overview relative to investigations, environmental impact statements, safety audits, and analyses of industrial incidents.

Develops working relationships with local regulatory agencies and serves as the site contact for all regulatory agencies inspections and enquiries, e.g. HAS, EPA, Irish Water, Sligo County Council

  • Ability to actively listen, build and maintain effective working relationships with internal/ external colleagues and stakeholders, and resolve conflict constructively.
  • Ability to successfully manage project and programs.
  • Experience in Biosafety and Biosecurity Programs and controls
  • Knowledge of dangerous goods (DGSA certification) would be beneficial but not required
  • Experience in Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) licensing and controls would be advantageous.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal & written.
  • Adaptable and flexible, willing to travel when needed.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering)
  • EHS or Engineering professional certification is preferred.
