Job Details

Our Client, a leading healthcare organization, is seeking a Specialist Medical Scientist in Histopathology for a specified purpose contract. Reporting to the Chief Medical Scientist and clinically to the Consultant Histopathologist, this role plays a pivotal part in planning, coordinating, and enhancing activities within a subdepartment of the Histopathology department. The primary goal is to meet established targets and maintain the organization's commitment to its mission, values, and ethos.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

In collaboration with the Chief Medical Scientist and/or Laboratory Manager, the Specialist Medical Scientist in Histopathology will:

  • Lead a designated subdepartment within the Histopathology laboratory.
  • Coordinate and provide training, including student in-service training and research project supervision.
  • Work closely with the Chief Medical Scientist to optimize the service.
  • Ensure efficient service delivery, adherence to standards, and compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Manage inventory within the Histopathology Department.
  • Uphold all aspects of the quality management system, ensuring a quality service.
  • Write and maintain Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, Policies, and Guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with international and national guidelines and standards.
  • Participate in the Hospital Performance Review and Development System.
  • Uphold the mission and values of our client.
  • Support the pursuit of JCI and ISO15189 Standard Accreditation and best practice standards.
  • Comply with relevant regulations, including the Blood Directive and Medical Devices Directives, as applicable.
  • Ensure the implementation of effective safety procedures and a safe working environment.
  • Contribute to the development of the laboratory information system.
  • Collaborate with the HOD/Laboratory Manager on financial reports, business cases, and cost-benefit analysis.
  • Motivate team members, aligning goals with the Hospital's Performance Review and Development system.
  • Promote continuing education and research activities for staff.
  • Coordinate the Major Emergency Plan for isolated incidents per Laboratory Management policy.
  • Act as a deputy for the Chief Medical Scientist when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Candidates For This Position Must Have

  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science or equivalent.
  • One of the following NFQ Level 9 postgraduate qualifications:
  • MSc Clinical Laboratory Science.
  • MSc Clinical Chemistry.
  • MSc Biomedical Science.
  • MSc Molecular Pathology.
  • Fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science.
  • Must be registered with CORU or eligible for membership upon completion of study.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience of working in an ISO15189 accredited Medical Laboratory.
  • Experience with iLab Laboratory Information System.
  • Experience with Histodissection and/or Immunohistochemistry.
  • Previous experience working in a senior medical scientist role.
  • Essential Experience
  • Possess four years of full-time clinical experience as a medical scientist.
  • Demonstrate evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
  • Knowledge and experience in the appropriate specialist area.
