THE PROJECT
In this cutting-edge project, we are harnessing the power of artificial neural networks and evolutionary reinforcement learning to revolutionize the growth of 2D homo/heterostructures with pinpoint precision. Our goal is to optimize the growth process by steering it towards specific crystal phases, unlocking new opportunities in materials science. By combining advanced AI techniques with materials synthesis, we are pushing the boundaries of control and predictability in 2D material engineering, paving the way for novel applications in electronics, photonics, and beyond.

YOUR TEAM
You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where physicists, chemists, surface scientists, electrical and biomedical engineers collaborate, each with their own expertise, to carry out common research in tight collaboration with industrial partners.
The “2D Materials Engineering” Research Line is coordinated by Dr. Camilla Coletti, Principal Investigator and Coordinator for the Graphene Flagship activities in IIT, who has extensive experience in 2D materials, surface science, chemical vapor deposition and photonics.
The mission of 2D Materials Engineering is to synthesize, investigate, and tailor two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures with the goal of enabling next generation photonic, electronic, biomedical and quantum devices. To this end, we cover the whole path: from the design of novel materials, displaying unprecedent electronic, optical and magnetic properties, to their implementation in real-world applications and industrial production lines.
Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:
Interface with the artificial intelligence development team of spoke 10 to ensure successful implementation of the artificial neural network for the specific growth target.
Conduct chemical vapor deposition growth of the selected 2D material, adhering to experimental protocols and safety guidelines.
Perform sample preparation, including cleaning and fabrication in the cleanroom environment, ensuring sample quality and consistency.
Conduct sample characterization using techniques such as Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy to assess material properties.
Perform data analysis to extract meaningful insights from experimental data.
WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU SHINE
Eligible applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering or related fields.
Strong experimental skills
A strong publication record
The ability to properly report, organize and publish research data
Creativity and marked enthusiasm for research is mandatory
Excellent command in spoken and written English
EXTRA AWESOME
Previous experience in 2D materials growth will be highly evaluated.
Experience on artificial neural networks and machine learning.
