Our Corporate HSEC and Human Rights Department in the Headquarters in Baar/Switzerland is looking for a Group Head of Social Performance and Human Rights. You will be working in a highly dynamic, diverse, and fast paced international environment with the opportunity to contribute to the HSEC and Human Rights strategy. You will need to ensure effective implementation of the Social Performance and Human Rights components of the HSEC and Human Rights Strategy to achieve Glencore’s commitment to be a trusted community partner and supporter of socio-economic opportunity; respect human rights everywhere we operate; meet stakeholder expectations; and build reputation and trust.

The Role:

Leadership

  • Lead and promote respect for human rights and effective impact assessment and management, stakeholder engagement including complaints and grievance processes, social development and social transitioning across the mining life cycle, cultural heritage management and relationships with vulnerable groups including Indigenous Peoples, and a working knowledge of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights
  • Demonstrate visible presence and commitment to implementation of policies, strategy, standards, systems, processes and interactions including on-site engagement with commodity departments and industrial assets.
  • Contribute to HSEC&HR Strategy, Risk Management, Reporting, and Assurance including support for annual reporting and disclosure commitments.
  • Monitor emerging trends and maintain the Group Social Performance and Human Rights policies, standards and procedures to reflect changing stakeholder expectations.
  • Advise, support and assist Industrial Leads, HSEC&HR Leads, industrial asset managers and functional teams in the implementation of Glencore Social Performance and Human Rights policies, standards and procedures; and
  • Foster an informed and proactive approach to Social Performance and Human Rights with Departments & HSEC&HR Leads.

Relationships and People

  • Develop and maintain strong, productive relationships with key Glencore Corporate and Department stakeholders and external clients’/advisers/ consultants and contractors.
  • Actively information in an open and timely manner through to relevant stakeholders to promote understanding and awareness.
  • Actively participate in resource and talent management to build experience, technical capability and competencies in Social Performance and Human Rights across Glencore’s industrial business.
  • Guide and coach management in technical aspects of Social Performance and Human Rights including risk and impact assessments, stakeholder engagement including complaints and grievance processes, community /social development and social contribution programs, incident reporting, investigation.
  • Represent Glencore at industry associations and subject matter forums.

Strategy

  • Contribute to the development of Glencore’s HSEC&HR strategy including the development of targets and KPIs to track performance
  • Review and advise on Department HSEC Strategies and Plans.
  • Design and manage Social Performance and Human Rights projects and initiatives to address strategic gaps; and
  • Develop a corporate partnership and engagement strategy to build strategic linkages with key external stakeholders including relevant subject matter organisations, academic institutions, NGOs and other interested parties.

Management Systems

  • Oversee systems and processes to monitor, assure and report on social and human rights performance
  • Oversee implementation of Glencore Corporate Community and Human Rights polices, standards, procedures, guidelines.
  • Oversee systems for reporting performance and investigation, classification and recording of incidents and ‘near misses.
  • Develop an annual plan for Group Social Performance and Human Rights, aligned with the Glencore HSEC&HR Strategy
  • Develop and manage the budget and monitor performance against budget.
  • Chair relevant internal Social Performance, Indigenous Peoples, Security and Human Rights Working Groups.

Assurance

  • Support development and implementation of assurance processes for Glencore’s Social Performance and Human Rights standards, ICMM PEs, Sustainability Reporting and other assurance requirements
  • Provide second line assurance on implementation of systems and processes to Glencore senior management and the Board HSEC Committee via site visits
  • Liaise with Internal Audit and HSEC Audit on HSEC&HR Assurance matters
  • Support development of Department second- and third-line Assurance plans

Technical Advice

  • Provide high quality advice and technical support to the business on Social Performance and Human Rights issues including Indigenous People, Cultural Heritage, and Security.
  • Provide support on high consequence or high potential consequence incident investigation and learnings across the business.
  • Assist Industrial Leads with intervention initiatives and programs as required; and
  • Review and make technical recommendations, where relevant, on Group policies, standards, procedures and guidelines from other functions.

Communication, Reporting and Reputation Management

  • Provide advice and engage with Sustainability, Corporate Affairs, Legal and Compliance and Departments on reputational issues management.
  • Support strategy and development of content to promote Glencore activities for internal and external reporting.
  • Prepare Board HSEC Committee, internal ESG Committee, Board reports and other internal communications as required; and
  • Maintain Social Performance and Human Rights sections of the Glencore intranet.

Qualifications:

  • Degree Qualified (Social Science discipline) and / or relevant in field experience.

Work Experience and Skill Requirements:

  • Minimum of 20 years relevant experience and familiarity in the resource or heavy industry sector.
  • International experience in multinational mining or oil and gas organisations
  • Strong operational (industrial asset) and corporate experience.
  • Knowledge of emerging global business trends and sustainability issues.
  • Understanding of international standards and codes such as, ISO26001, VPSHR, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, IFC Performance Standards, UNDRIP, ICMM PEs
  • Experience planning and implementing monitoring, evaluation and assurance activities.
  • Strong communication, influencing, and relationship building skills.
  • Sound analytical, report and standard writing skills.
  • Strong personal values aligned with Glencore values
