Context:

IOM’s Department of Media and Communications (DMC) is comprised of experienced
communications professionals based in Geneva and Manila.

The team provides advice and support on media and public information issues to IOM
Headquarters, Regional, Country and Global Offices worldwide. It is responsible for direct media
relations with UN-accredited Geneva press corps and others, administers IOM’s global social
media accounts and website and manages content submitted from around the world to be
published on those global platforms, oversees institutional branding and initiates and manages
global information campaigns.

DMC produces a wide range of print and audio-visual materials for a variety of audiences to
enhance understanding about IOM’s work and its position as the leading UN agency in the field
of migration, and to advocate on behalf of the rights of migrants worldwide.


Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Director, DMC and direct supervision of the Social
Media Officer, the Social Media Associate will be responsible and accountable for providing
support and assistance in development and implementation of the IOM’s social media activities
and strategy, as well as advancing IOM’s social media outputs on Instagram and TikTok.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

1. Contribute to the development and implementation of the IOM’s social media strategy and
provide technical support on matters related to digital trends and campaigns.

2. Assist in managing IOM’s social media activities in alignment with the Organization’s strategic
communications priorities and branding guidelines including, but not limited to, the development
of online content and campaigns delivered across various platforms.

3. In coordination with the Social Media Officer, facilitate the management of IOM’s Instagram
and TikTok social media accounts and use analytics tools to measure performance and guide
strategic social media decisions.

4. Monitor emerging trends on Instagram and TikTok, such as challenges, hashtags, and viral
content, and incorporate them into the social media strategy to boost engagement.

5. Create and curate engaging content for IOM’s Instagram and TikTok social media channels,
including text, images, videos, and graphics.

6. Actively engage with followers on Instagram and TikTok by responding to comments, direct
messages, and mentions, and fostering a positive and interactive community on both platforms.

7. Develop and execute innovative social media campaigns on Instagram and TikTok.

8. Identify, build relationships with, and collaborate with micro-influencers and creators to
co-create authentic content that resonates with target audiences on Instagram and TikTok.

9. Collaborate with DMC and On-Line Communications Unit to develop online content,
campaigns, awareness-raising efforts to promote safe, orderly, and regular migration, and the
rights of migrants.

10. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree in Digital Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field from an

accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or,

  • University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience

Experience

  • Experience in marketing with emphasis on digital/social media;
  • Experience in managing Instagram and TikTok accounts;
  • Proven experience in developing social media campaigns and content for Instagram and

TikTok;

  • Proven experience in building and sustaining strong relationships with micro influencers and

online content creators;

  • Proven experience in developing and being part of Instagram reels and TikTok videos;


  • Working knowledge and experience leveraging social media in support of larger integrated

social media campaigns within the United Nations or NGO sector; and,

  • Practical experience of digital content production tools such design and video editing software.

Skills

  • Very good understanding of social media trends on Instagram and TikTok and how they can

be implemented in the United Nations sector;

  • Strong understanding of migration issues;
  • Good research, writing, communication and analytical skills;
  • Proficient in digital and social media across paid platforms, specifically in Facebook, Twitter,

Tik Tok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Viber, and other emerging platforms;

  • Good communication skills in English (oral and written);
  • Good understanding of communication campaigns and tools, including engaging audiences via

social media and other digital channels;

  • Very good level of computer literacy;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a diverse environment;
  • Proven ability to produce accurate, high-quality work and meet deadlines; and,
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work independently.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be
fluent in one of the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another
official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process,
which may include written and/or oral assessments.
