Institute for Atomistic Material Modeling in Aqueous Media
Remuneration EG 13
Start of employment March 1st 2025
Application deadline January 2nd 2025
Scope full time and for a maximum of four years
The newly founded Institute for Atomistic Material Modeling in Aqueous Media focuses on the molecular interactions of different materials, especially in aqueous solutions. When liquids are strongly confined, this leads to fundamentally new effects. In this PhD project we want to investigate the microscopic mechanisms of salt precipitation upon water evaporation from a porous material, a major source of agricultural land loss due to soil salinization.
Within this project we will build upon our previous work to set up an evaporation/precipitation model using the lattice Boltzmann method within the waLBerla CFD framework. The continuum-solvers will be parametrized via atomistic simulations and nucleation shall be characterized by combining statistical mechanics, classical nucleation theory and machine learning approaches. We will work together with leading experimental groups from Hamburg University of Technology and DESY and employ high-resolution, nano-resolved salt growth patterns from X-Ray tomography data, direclty relating numerical modeling to experimental data.
