Your role and responsibilities

In our group, we offer an internship position in the field of numerical methods and scientific computing for industrial applications. The scope of the internship is to contribute to ongoing projects aiming at extending and improving existing simulation software for multiphysics applications in electrical engineering. The focus of the work will be on understanding, developing, and implementing advanced numerical models to improve accuracy, robustness and speed. During this six-month internship with flexible start date early 2025 you will be integrated in the Theoretical and Computational Methods Team, and you will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced researchers in an international group of leading scientists and engineers. The work model for the role is: hybrid #LI-Hybrid This role is contributing to the Theoretical and Computational Methods Team at the ABB corporate research center in Baden-Dättwil, Aargau, Switzerland. You will be mainly responsible for: • Collaborate with the research team to develop and implement numerical algorithms for scientific computing applications • Read relevant literature to understand existing methodologies • Participate in the coding and testing of software tools • Analyze computational results and provide insights for optimizing algorithms and software performance • Present progress and results to the team during regular meetings • Document findings, methodologies and results

Qualifications for the role

  • You currently pursue a degree (advanced B.Sc. or M.Sc.) in numerical mathematics, mathematical engineering, computational sciences, or a related subject
  • You have a fundamental understanding of numerical methods and algorithms from both theoretical and practical perspectives
  • You have good scientific programming skills in the context of numerical methods (e.g. C++, Matlab, Python, Java, etc.)
  • You are curious and possess good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • You are able to work independently as well as part of an international team
  • You possess good communication skills, both written and verbal in English
  • Candidates which hold a non-EU/non-EFTA passport are in possession of a valid VISA/work permit for Switzerland or a confirmation for a mandatory internship from their university
