Our Profile

The Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management at RWTH Aachen University is actively involved in many national and international research projects - often with research partners from other disciplines. Our research focuses on groundwater, floods/drought, constructive and nature-based hydraulic engineering, coastal and estuarine research, water morphology and sediment transport as well as hydropower. In addition to these topics, we are always working on exciting new research projects that arise from current issues. Our institute's own experimental hall with over 2,000 square meters of space offers optimal possibilities for developing and operating models for projects on a large scale.

Our institute has a vacancy for a research assistant to work on a wide range of engineering tasks in the context of short and long-term scientific projects.

Your Profile

Promising candidates need a completed university degree (master's or equivalent) in the field of computer science or natural/engineering sciences (e.g. geophysics or geoinformatics). In addition, first experience in the following topics is necessary:

  • Experience and interest in the field of earth observation/remote sensing or in the processing of geodata, specific experience with SAR data preferred
  • Proficiency in Python, Google Earth Engine, QGIS, and preferably also R
  • First experience with machine learning, deep learning experience preferred
  • Ideally with in scientific writing and
  • Interest in hydro-meteorological disasters, data assimilation, uncertainty quantification, or numerical modelling

The following soft skills are also expected:

  • Willingness to work in a team and to take on responsibility and own initiative
  • Very good communication skills and a creative mind
  • Confident knowledge of the English language, German is a plus
  • Structured way of working with a focus on the essentials
  • Willingness to travel in inland and abroad
  • Interest in the education of students
  • Aspiration to do a doctorate as preparation for the next career step

Your Duties and Responsibilities

Research: You will work on scientific projects on using Earth Observation and citizen science data, as well as advanced techniques such as machine learning and data assimilation, information theory and physics-based modelling of geohazards, to improve the prediction and post-event estimation of water hazards, risks, and impacts. Depending on the project, research assignments nationally and internationally may also be required.

Knowledge transfer: Through workshops lasting one or more days, participation in conferences, presentations and publications, and research stays you will transfer our research results and findings into practice and into the scientific context. At national and international events, you will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with specialists and experts, develop new ideas and network efficiently.

Teaching: We offer lectures, seminars, excursions and student theses for students at RWTH Aachen University. Our employees provide support in the various areas of teaching.

What We Offer

The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of 1 year.
An extension of 2 years is planned. The option to extend the contract for three further years is available.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a part-time position (50 % of the standard weekly hours for full-time employees).
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.
