In order toThe Faculty of Geosciences and Environment (FGSE) of the University of Lausanne invites applications for the position of Microscopy and Imaging Lab Manager in Paleontology at the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTE).

We are looking for a candidate with experience in microscopy and imaging of macroscopic and microscopic geological and paleontological materials, to ensure the smooth operation of our series of microscopes and imaging systems, and laboratories including acid digestion, aquarium and experimental taphonomy labs, while training and assisting users on these systems and in these laboratories. Instruments include various types of binocular magnifiers/stereomicroscopes and petrographic/polarizing microscopes sometimes with digital camera, a Keyence VHX digital microscope, cathodoluminescence microscopes, several Canon EOS SLR cameras and a multispectral macro-imaging system. Some specimen preparation laboratories are also under the responsibility of this person, such as the acid digestion laboratory, the aquarium research laboratory, and the experimental taphonomy laboratory.

The person recruited will work in collaboration with the paleontology research group to develop and optimize new methods for imaging and analyzing fossils and geological materials. Duties include ensuring the smooth operation of the microscopy and imaging systems and laboratories listed above, as well as coordinating repairs, managing regular maintenance and services, and ordering consumables from external suppliers.

The person recruited will also be responsible for providing theoretical and practical training and assistance to users of these systems, instruments and laboratories, organizing booking schedules, assisting with data processing and analyses, and contributing to the Institute's laboratory safety practices.

Your responsibilities

35% of your time will be devoted to ensuring optimum operation of the microscopy and imaging systems, and management of the acid digestion, experimental taphonomy and aquarium laboratories.
15% of your time will be devoted to assisting and training users of the systems, instruments and laboratories.
30% of your time will be devoted to developing and optimizing new methods for the analysis and imaging of geological materials and fossils, and to conducting paleontological research.

Your qualifications

You must hold a PhD degree in Earth Sciences or Paleontology (or any discipline deemed equivalent), with demonstrated expertise in the use and development of imaging systems and microscopes, and in the field of paleontology.

A good command of French and English is required.
