The Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Bielefeld and the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC TRR) 358 "Integral structures in geometry and representation theory" has the following job opening in its project B5:

Research Position (PhD position)

Your Tasks In the period until 19 June 2025:

  • research in the field of algebraic number theory and arithmetic arithmetic geometry (65 %)
  • teaching to the extent of 3 hours per week (25 %)
  • contributions to the academic selfadministration (10 %)


From 20 June 2025:

  • research within project B5 "p-adic L-functions, L-invariants and the cohomology of arithmetic groups" (85 %)
  • participate in joint research projects and discussions in the project B5, and assist in planning and organizing project-oriented events, e. g. workshops (5 %)
  • contribute to the main topics of discussion and research in the CRC (5 %)
  • assist in planning and organizing CRC events (5 %)


If the position is also assigned to TRR 358 after 31.12.2026, the teaching and administrative duties will be eliminated and the "scientific collaboration" portion of the duties increases accordingly.

Employment is conducive to scientific qualification. Your Profile We expect

  • scientific university degree (e. g. Diploma or Master) in mathematics or a related subject
  • good written and spoken English skills
  • independent, dedicated and self-reliant style of work
  • cooperative and team-oriented way of working

Preferred experience and skills

  • knowledge and experience in algebraic number theory, algebraic geometry and the geometry and the theory of modular forms
