DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
For high-end synchrotron radiation applications, the 3rd generation storage ring PETRA III is one of the most brilliant X-ray sources. The "Coherence Applications" beamline P10 is specialized in the development and application of coherent X-ray scattering techniques in the medium hard X-ray regime. Scientifically, the experiments aim to gain a deeper understanding of structural and dynamical properties of matter at nanometer length scales. The candidate should pursue his own research portfolio applying coherent X-ray scattering methods and enable the P10 beamline user community to continue to perform successfully state-of-the-art experiments.
About your role:
- Further develop innovative instrumentation and sample environments for coherent X-ray scattering experiments in collaboration with external groups, including the development of a possible successor beamline at PETRA IV
- Support the installation and commissioning of instrumentation at the beamline
- Perform advanced coherent X-ray scattering experiments making use of the specific beamline capabilities
- Develop own independent research and participate in collaborative projects with external groups
- Support external user groups at the beamline
- Lead a small team of scientist, engineers and technicians

Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.
About you:
- PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science or related disciplines
- Experience with (coherent) X-ray techniques using synchrotron radiation
- Practical knowledge of programming and scripting languages and modern ray-tracing codes
- Experimental skills and interest in instrumentation development
- Excellent knowledge of English, basic knowledge of German
- Teamwork abilities, structured working, setting priorities
