DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

Plasma accelerators are poised to trigger a revolution in accelerator science. DESY is committed to exploiting the full potential of this cutting-edge technology developing state-of-the-art plasma accelerators for a range of demanding research applications: from compact FEL drivers to energy-efficient synchrotron injectors; from linac energy boosters to plasma-based colliders. DESY is also committed to developing advanced plasma accelerator technology for a wide range of medical and industrial applications. Experimental facilities include the vanguard laser driver KALDERA, the advanced beam-driven facility FLASHForward, and a host of ancillary research and development laboratories. The theory and simulation team of the plasma acceleration group at DESY develops and harnesses simulation tools to help understand experiments, propose novel concepts and investigate new mechanisms, key ingredients for plasma-based acceleration research. The tools developed range from open-source Python libraries running on a laptop (Wake-T) to open-source, GPU-capable simulation codes running on world-leading supercomputers (HiPACE++). They are used in combination with other popular methods in the community to propose solutions on various aspects of plasma-based acceleration research towards collider and photon sources.

About your role:

  • Contribute to the development of open-source codes for plasma acceleration and optimisation tools
  • Contribute to the development of open-source methods for the simulation of Inversen Compton Scattering (ICS)
  • Investigate theoretically different aspects of plasma acceleration and its use for ICS
  • Exchange with experimental teams to help with design and planning, support understanding of measurements and improve operations
  • Record, analyse and document results for communication through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences and workshops
  • Contribute to the supervision of students and work closely with other members of the plasma accelerator community at DESY and with external collaborators

Good reasons to join:

As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.

About you:

  • PhD in physics or equivalent qualification
  • Background in the field of numerical simulations and plasma physics
  • Interest in applicable modern programming techniques (C++, git, Python, bash, GPU computing, Jupyter) as well as the usage of supercomputers
  • lnterest and/or experience in collaborating with experimental programs to support understanding and planning
  • Self-motivated with a streng desire to drive central aspects of your work forward independently
  • Outstanding teamwork and interpersonal communication skills
  • Technology-transfer focused mindset
